What is a legal secretary program?
The Legal Secretary program is an open admission, evening program designed to provide currently employed secretaries and recent secretarial graduates with specialized office training in the legal environment. The program will not involve training in traditional secretarial skills. The training will emphasize mastery of computer skills, familiarity of legal office theory and procedure, and actual work experience through cooperative education in a law office setting. Upon completion of the program, many students continue their education by applying to the paralegal program.
Applicants must have one year secretarial experience, completion of an accredited secretarial program, or bachelor's degree. Also the ability to operate word processing equipment and to type 60-70 words per minute.
The legal secretary may prepare initial drafts of common legal documents such as subpoenas, complaints, motions, and summonses. They may review law journals, assist with legal research, handle payments for witness fees, record trial dates, schedule witnesses, and deliver subpoenas.
