Vocational Education Scholarship Available for Students
Community
college students have two opportunities to apply for scholarships this
year.
First deadline is July 1 for the Fall 2008/Spring 2009 school year for
students to apply for vocational education scholarships that are available
from 16 scholarship funds at the Hawai‘i Community Foundation. The program
is meant to target students who have an expressed interest and desire
to pursue continued educational opportunities in vocational education
courses.
“Our scholarship program is made up of funds established by generous
individuals, businesses, private foundations and organizations,” said
Hawai‘i Community Foundation’s Scholarship Officer Rona Kekauoha. “Vocational
education gives students the necessary tools to further their education,
and provide opportunity for successful transitions into productive employment
and good citizenship.” In 2007, the Foundation awarded $5 million to
1,500 students to attend institutions of higher education in Hawai‘i
and on the mainland.
Vocational education programs include, but are not limited to: culinary
arts, auto repair, diesel mechanics, cosmetology, computer graphics
and assistive medical technology. Vocational education is described
as certification or degree programs designed to teach students skills
for a specific segment of employment.
