DEPARTMENT OF THE PROSECUTING ATTORNEY VOLUNTEERS NEEDED

The Department of the Prosecuting Attorney for the City and County of Honolulu (the Prosecutor's Office) currently seeks volunteer paralegal and/or legal secretary students to assist in its Misdemeanor/Traffic Division. This division is a high-volume unit handling thousands of criminal cases each month. The caseload consists of traffic matters, Driving Under the Influence of Alcohol/Drug cases, criminal violations, petty misdemeanors and full misdemeanors for the entire island of Oahu . This division has one chief, one captain, 16 trial attorneys and approximately 20 support staff, or the equivalent of a medium-size law firm. Volunteers will gain broad exposure to Honolulu 's criminal justice system in a fast-paced, exciting environment, while at the same time providing a great service to the community.

To comply with the state Judiciary's recent requirement that most misdemeanor/traffic matters be charged by written complaint, volunteers are immediately needed to (1) analyze and screen cases to determine relevant criminal charges, (2) assist in drafting of written complaints/pleadings to be filed in the District Court of the First Circuit, State of Hawaii, and provide assistance to the staff and prosecutors in responding to discovery requests, redacting discovery for confidential information and tracking cases from pre-arraignment through sentencing.

The Prosecutor's Office is open to sponsoring volunteers through the Cooperative Paralegal Education (LAW 193P) or Cooperative Legal Secretary Education (LAW193S) programs, so that volunteers may earn credits for their work, in addition to gaining invaluable work experience. Parking is not subsidized.
