TO: Legal Education Students

FROM: Cynthia N. Kimura, Counselor

DATE: February 13, 2008
SUBJECT: Fall 2009 NEW LED Curricula & LAW 148

Fall 2009 new paralegal & legal secretary programs curricula  and

LAW 148 Legal Document Preparation (former LAW 146 & 156)

NEW PARALEGAL and LEGAL SECRETARY CURRICULA:

Effective fall 2009, the paralegal and legal secretary programs curricula will change. Students entering or *reentering the programs fall 2009 and after will follow the new curricula. Students currently enrolled/registered may follow the curriculum in effect at the time of their entry into the paralegal or legal secretary programs or follow the new curricula as long as they are continuously registered each semester. Students may not mix and choose courses from different curricula.

*Reentering is when the student does not register for classes for one semester (or more) at KCC and returns to the program in a subsequent semester.

Paralegal program changes: A major change in the fall 2009 paralegal curriculum is the deletion of LAW 146 Litigation Document Preparation & Theory. A new required course, LAW 148 Legal Document Preparation, will be developed which will include components of LAW 146 and LAW 156 Specialize Document Preparation & Theory.

Other proposed changes to the paralegal program include:

  • offering of advanced LAW courses (e.g., advanced family law, advanced legal writing, advanced computer assisted legal research, advanced tort, etc.)
  • requiring an advanced LAW course for program completion
  • requiring additional LAW courses (e.g., LAW 105 (formerly 201) Law Office Management, LAW 111 Litigation, LAW 145 Computer Application in the Law Office, and LAW 148 (combined LAW 146 & LAW 156) Legal Document Preparation)
  • requiring LAW 111 as the prerequisite to LAW 148
  • deleting the 12 credits of electives to accommodate the additional required LAW courses

Legal secretary program changes: A major change in the fall 2009 legal secretary curriculum is the deletion of LAW 146 Litigation Document Preparation & Theory and LAW 156 Specialize Document Preparation & Theory. A new required course, LAW 148 Legal Document Preparation, will be developed which will include components of LAW 146 and LAW 156.

Other proposed changes to the legal secretary program include:

  • requiring LAW 111 Litigation,
  • requiring LAW 111 as the prerequisite to LAW 148

LAW 148 LEGAL DOCUMENT PREPARATION:

Effective fall 2009, LAW 148 Legal Document Preparation will be required of the paralegal and legal secretary programs. Effective fall 2008, LAW 148 (experimental number will be assigned) will be offered instead of LAW 146.

Currently Enrolled/Registered Paralegal program students:

•  who have not taken LAW 146 may take LAW 148 (fall 2008 experimental number will be assigned) instead of LAW 146
•  who have taken LAW 146 may use LAW 146 as part of their original curriculum as long as they remain continuing students. If there is a break in enrollment, the new fall 2009 curriculum must be followed

Current Enrolled/Registered Legal Secretary program students:

  • who have not completed LAW 146 and LAW 156 must take LAW 148 (fall 2008 experimental number will be assigned) and LAW 111 Litigation instead of LAW 146 and LAW 156
  • who completed LAW 146 or LAW 156 must also take LAW 148 (fall 2008 experimental)
