I don't have secretarial skills; can I apply for the Legal Secretary program?
Sorry, the legal secretary program is designed to provide currently employed secretaries and recent secretarial graduates with specialized office training in the legal environment. One year full time secretarial experience or completion of an accredited secretarial program or consent of the instructor is required for admission. The program will not involve training in traditional secretarial skills, since the students are to obtain these basic skills from sources other than the legal secretary program. The training will emphasize mastery of computer skills, familiarity of legal office theory and procedure, and actual work experience through cooperative education in a law office setting.
Are the legal secretary program courses applicable to the paralegal program?
Yes, the required legal secretary courses may be used as part of the paralegal program. Courses may fulfill a program requirement, substantive LAW requirement, or satisfy an elective requirement. Contact the counselor for more information or call 808.734.9103
I’m a legal secretary; should I pursue the legal secretary or the paralegal program?
That depends on your level of experience. Often working legal secretaries find the paralegal program more helpful because it provides a wider scope of knowledge. New secretaries to the field often seek basic knowledge first.
What degree will I be awarded upon completion of program requirements?
You will receive the Certificate of Completion (CC).
How do I apply for the Certificate of Completion (CC)?
You should contact us or call 808.734.9103 for an application or for more information. Certificates are awarded by the department. Normally the cooperative education instructor will distribute the application form.
