What classes should I take first for the paralegal program?
LAW 101 Hawai`i Legal System is recommended (not required) as one of the first courses to take. It will give you an overview of the legal system and specific knowledge of the paralegal within that system and ethical concerns.
What course should I take last?
The cooperative education class which is similar to an internship is recommended as the last LAW course taken. Coop Ed is a “capstone” course which allows you to apply legal skills learned in classes in an actual legal office. The course also offers career guidance, including the preparation of resumes, employment interviewing techniques, and job hunting skills.
I have no knowledge of the legal environment what classes do you suggest?
Besides LAW 101 Hawai`i Legal System, LAW 201/105 Law Office Management, LAW 111 Litigation, and LAW 145 Computer Applications in the Law Office are excellent courses, if you have limited legal knowledge.
- LAW 201/105 focuses on the business of law and law office management (i.e., governance, client relations, and legal fees)
- LAW 111 prepares the student to assist the trial attorney in civil litigation
- LAW 145 acquaints the student with various computer concepts, practical computer applications, and the use of technology in the legal environment (i.e., timekeeping, billing, and case management)
