When should I take the required cooperative education class?
The cooperative education (LAW 193P or LAW 193S) class which is similar to an internship is recommended as the last LAW course taken. Coop Ed is a “capstone” course which allows you to apply legal skills learned in classes in an actual legal office. The course also offers career guidance, including the preparation of resumes, employment interviewing techniques, and job hunting skills.
How many hours of work are required?
The course requires one hour of lecture per week and a total of 144 hours of actual work in the legal environment which is approximately nine hours per week for 16 weeks.
I already work in the legal environment. Do I still have to take the cooperative education class?
Yes, the course involves more than just working in the legal environment. Coop Ed integrates classroom learning with supervised practical experience. The course also offers career guidance, preparation of resumes, employment interviewing techniques, and job-hunting skills.
I work full time, how can I complete the cooperative education requirement?
Students have creatively completed the required work experience. Some have taken annual leave to complete the requirement. Others have completed their hours after work or on the weekends. On exception, some have started the work experience prior to the semester starting and others have extended the work experience after the semester has ended. Individual circumstances should be discussed with the instructor.
